PII: S0167-7799(02)02027-9 Ladurner and colleagues [1] were the first to use computed tomography (CT) to study physiological function in the human brain by measuring cerebral blood volume with intravenously injected X-ray contrast agent (an iodinated compound that preferentially stops X-rays more effectively than tissue). They used an equilibrium technique in which CT scanning was done at a time when the injected contrast agent had established an equilibrium distribution throughout the whole body. An alternative technique, called dynamic CT, uses serial CT scans at the same location to study the distribution of contrast agent in the brain as a function of time, and was first used by Traupe et al. [2]. From these early beginnings, dynamic CT methodology has evolved through several generations of technological advances in CT technology [3], and dynamic CT has become the dominant CT method in the evaluation of (physiological) function within the human body. The technique has thus been termed functional CT.The important advantages of functional CT in comparison to other imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography, are its accessibility and simplicity. Functional CT makes use of conventional CT scanners in radiology departments so it is available to patients 24 hours per day. In addition, the method only involves the intravenous injection of conventional contrast agent and CT scanning, enabling the study to be easily performed without extensive additional training of staff.

Simultaneous SPECT imaging of multi-targets to assist in identifying hepatic lesions
Molecular imaging technique is an attractive tool to detect liver disease at early stage. This study aims to develop a simultaneous dual-isotope single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT imaging method to assist diagnosis of hepatic tumor and liver fibrosis. Animal models of liver fibrosis and orthotopic human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were established. The tracers of (131)I-NG...
متن کاملAssessment of the individual renal function in chronic unilateral renal obstruction using functional CT as compared to 99mTc-DTPA renal scan
Introduction: The selection of optimal treatment of obstructive nephrouropathy requires information about the functional status of each kidney. Nuclear renal scanning objectively measure differential renal function, multiple studies have demonstrated the role of assessment of renal perfusion and GFR with triphasic CT. The aim of this study is to assess the role of CT based on renal parenchyma...
متن کاملModeling of Correlated Objects with application to Detection of Metastatic Cancer using Functional CT Imaging
Perfusion computed tomography (CTp) is an emerging functional imaging modality that uses physiological models to quantify characteristics pertaining to the passage of fluid through blood vessels. Perfusion characteristics provide physiological correlates for neovascularization induced by tumor angiogenesis. Thus CTp offers promise as a noninvasive quantitative functional imaging tool for cancer...
متن کاملA novel isolated dual perfusion/superfusion heart model for physiological and pharmacological evaluation of mammalian heart preparations
Abstract Introduction: Isolated perfused heart models such as perfusion and superfusion are commonly used for mammalian heart research. However, there are several fundamental limitations in the current techniques. In perfusion model, a suitable cannula is connected to the aorta and the perfusion is retrogradely performed. But, electrode displacement is a potential unwanted event resulted fr...
متن کاملIterative reconstruction algorithms for dose reduction in Micro-CT
Aims In preclinical setting, micro-CT is used to provide anatomical information of small animals (e.g. mice), and can be used in conjunction with functional imaging modalities, which provide information on biological processes in tissues. The combination of micro-CT with functional imaging provides localization of the investigated process, i.e. physiology or disease, within the animal and furth...
